The Best Fries In Liverpool

18 November

Fries are often seen as the sidekick to the main part of a meal. The Robin to a burger's Batman. Does that make sense? Am I talking nonsense again?

Anyway, fries are no longer relegated to just a side dish. They've undergone a makeover, and now they're a legit meal in themselves. It's actually kind of rare, depending on the type of places you like to eat, to find yourself with only one choice of fries on the menu of a Liverpool restaurant. We like to get creative with our chips.

Here's where you can find the tastiest fries in Liverpool.

Where: 358 Smithdown Road, Liverpool, L15 5AN

Why it's the best: Two words. Pizza. Fries. Need I say more? Probably not, but I will anyway, otherwise this post will look kind of sparse and weird.

Portland Street 358 do a variety of dishes, including breakfast and some mouthwatering desserts, but anyone who's been there will rave about the pizza fries. I keep it simple and go for tomato, black pepper and of course, melted cheese. Think of them as the classy sister of cheesy chips.

In addition to those, there are Tennessee fries (pulled pork, beans and cheese) and holy mole fries (beef chilli, melted cheese, guacamole and tortilla chips) amongst others. They're a little bit out of the way, on Smithdown Road just outside of the city centre, but they're well worth a visit.

Where: 85 Seel Street, Liverpool, L1 4BB

Why it's the best: I've already raved about Slim's here and alluded to their excellent range of chips, but lets go into a bit more detail. Slim's absolutely kick it out of the park in this area.

My personal favourite are the chilli cheese fries. Beef chilli and melted cheese, a classic. Then there are the lo pan fries which are topped with curry sauce, siu mai and Sriracha, which seems to be having a bit of a moment.

If you really fancy going all out, pick the Coach Bombay fries. Confit duck, gravy and cheese topped with a fried duck egg. Boom.

Where: 91 Bold Street, Liverpool, L1 4HF

Why it's the best: Maray is the kind of place that you might walk past if you didn't know better. Tucked away, minding their own business on Bold Street, their reputation for delicious food with a twist has grown over the past year or two. They're the odd one out on this list in a way, as they only have one choice of fries. But man, these fries. They're something else.

It sounds simple enough. Chips, houmous and green chilli sauce with a sprinkling of chillies and spring onion for decoration. But, oh my. That combination of ingredients tastes so good. Houmous and chips are a genius idea, and yet I never would have thought of it myself.

A word of warning, though; they're not for the faint-hearted. I found them just the right amount of spicy and I like to think I can handle a bit of heat.
